What is Binocular Vision Dysfunction?
Misalignment between the eyes is often so imperceptible that patients and their doctors do not notice it. But this small difference can cause the muscles around the eyes to over-work in order to present clear images to the brain. This extra work causes eye strain and fatigue.
The effects of binocular vision dysfunction are wide-ranging and, in many cases, life-altering. Patients often report headaches, nausea, trouble walking, head tilt, difficulty reading, anxiety, panic attacks and double vision. One particularly troubling side effect is dizziness while driving. Because the eyes struggle to keep up with the body’s motion, driving can be off limits to someone with binocular vision dysfunction.
What’s worse is that many patients with the disorder are often misdiagnosed with migraines or vertigo. When treatments for these conditions fail, patients are left suffering for years.
