For many people with Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD), light sensitivity is more than just a minor inconvenience—it can be a persistent source of discomfort, especially in places with bright or harsh lighting. Fluorescent lighting in locations like shopping malls, doctor’s offices, and big box retailers can often feel overwhelming to those with BVD. Many patients even find themselves reaching for sunglasses indoors, a necessary step to help manage the intensity of these environments.

So, what’s the connection between light sensitivity and BVD? At NeuroVisual Specialists of Florida, we’ve found that patients with BVD often experience light sensitivity due to the misalignment of their eyes, which forces the eyes to work harder to focus, triggering overstimulation and discomfort.

How We Address Light Sensitivity for BVD Patients

To help our patients manage light sensitivity, we offer solutions designed to minimize discomfort in indoor settings without the need for sunglasses. We work with two specific types of tints that have proven highly effective for reducing sensitivity to indoor lighting:

  1. FL-41 Tint: This is a special rose-colored tint designed to block out specific wavelengths of light that can be irritating to those with light sensitivity. Research shows that FL-41 tint helps reduce the impact of fluorescent lighting and other artificial lights, making indoor environments more tolerable.
  2. Bluetech Tint: This tint is engineered to filter out blue light, which can be especially troublesome in indoor settings where patients are exposed to LED screens and certain lighting sources that emit high levels of blue light. Bluetech can help reduce strain and enhance visual comfort, particularly in environments with excessive blue light exposure.

The Role of Prisms in Reducing Light Sensitivity

In some cases, simply adjusting the alignment of a patient’s eyes can reduce their need for tinted lenses. By incorporating a prism into the patient’s glasses, we help the eyes work together more seamlessly, potentially lessening the intensity of their light sensitivity. When prisms alone don’t provide enough relief, adding tint to the lenses is a practical option to enhance comfort further.
